The first house is formed by the sign that is rising into visibility from the invisible depths below the Earth. It is the flash illumination that breaks the deep mystery of night. The ascendant/rising sign, first house, and ruler of the first house point to us as the agent of our lives or the captain of our ship. The very particular ways we have access (or struggle) to being the agent of our life story is the gnosis these signatures can offer us.

To go deeper into an exploration of the first house we are working with Eos/Aurora (Greek/Roman) the goddess of dawn, the personification of dawn. We will explore the chart ruler as “where the dawn breaks” in the chart. The dawn breaking is the moment where a new beginning is possible. Interestingly, Eos was understood in some versions of the myth to be an abductress of men (to satisfy her voracious appetite) while in other versions of the myth dawn brings liberation from the confusing wanderings and potential lunacies of night. We understand that this complexity of how to interpret the dawn comes back to our chart ruler… is it the place we are consumed (abducted) by our own voracious impulses or is the place we breakthrough after a long sojourn through the dark? Simple answers are not required.

This workshop will include teachings on the 1st house from Hellenistic & Evolutionary perspectives, Eos/Aurora, and we will work with chart volunteers in the live audience to demonstrate/explore the material. This workshop is suitable for all-levels, offering something for everyone wherever you may be in your astrological study/practice.

You will learn:

  • Evolutionary/Modern & Ancient/Hellenistic influenced perspectives on the 1st house
  • Myths of Eos/Aurora as a lens into your own experience of your 1st house and chart ruler (planetary ruler of your ascendant)
  • Ways to interpret the ascendant, 1st house, planets in the first house, and chart ruler as part of an interconnected story that correlate with an individual's sense of agency and life direction

Why it matters to reflect deeper on the first house and the place that the dawn is breaking:

Agency and free will, as much as this is a universal concept, shows up way differently in different natal charts and in different people's lives. The nature of this essential self may not even be obvious to ourselves -- finding it on the map can induce awareness of possibility more lucidly. There are places here, in our charts, that reflect our capacity to be born anew over and over again, both by a natural ability and by a choice. We may have obstacles connected to our first house/ascendant/chart ruler that are also useful to understand so that we can rise to these challenges with awareness and purpose. We may also have gifts to remember.

Meet your instructors

As a child of Mercury, Aliza finds great joy in sharing information. Her written work and conversations make metaphorical hyperlinks, connecting fields outside of yet related to cosmic exploration. These include: film, music and television media, visual and installation art, architecture, philosophy and theory. She is an astrologer with nearly half a century of lived experience and pastiched gnosis.
Her educational background includes Hellenistic, Evolutionary, Archetypal and Holotropic Astrology. Currently, she offers limited individual chart consultation and teaches classes inside Monarch Astrology’s DIVINER course container. Since January 2020, she has been Sabrina Monarch’s teaching assistant through several cohorts of the EA Intensive.
With a lunar Sun and angular Neptune, Aliza moves through the world in gestures rather than solid lines. Though she is steeped in astrological study, she believes her main qualifications are also less tangible. The deepest insights and connections in her own life have come to her in liminal spaces, in moments of collapse/grace, surprise encounters, losses, dreams and creative trance states. These are experiences she honors in others as much as objective accomplishments. Chaos and order are equally beautiful, as are success and failure. She holds no agenda for clients. Her only aim as astrologer is to pay attention – to the motions of the cosmos and the person in front of her. The goal is communion, and the road there is paved with unconditional positive regard. Sabrina Monarch is an author/novelist, evolutionary astrologer, and counselor/coach. She gained an unconventional education in creative writing by discovering an online writing community at age 12 and gaining dozens of mentors across the globe who would help her learn how to write for the next several years. She developed an interest in astrology at a young age as well, and took her craft deeper in her early twenties at the same time that her psychic abilities were noticeably coming online.
She writes weekly forecasts at www.monarchastrology.com, is the host of a podcast about spiritual lifestyle and personal evolution called Magic of the Spheres, and she teaches astrology online, including an all-levels Evolutionary Astrology Intensive and advanced alumni courses.
Sabrina is widely appreciated for her poetic voice and capacity to name subtle, abstract undercurrents of any particular astrological moment. She has an M.A. in Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness from the California Institute of Integral Studies, currently resides in Portland, Oregon, and has a deep love affair with the myths, lands, and seas of Greece.
